The inner layer of cattle hide, cleaned, sometimes bleached, then dried into a hard chew.

Where it comes from: Leather industry by-product, processed in tanneries and food plants worldwide.
Why it's in the product: A long-lasting chew that scrapes plaque while the dog works on it.
Safety and toxicity: The risk is mechanical, not chemical. Softened chunks are a documented cause of choking and intestinal obstruction, and swallowed pieces swell. Recalls for salmonella contamination have happened. Supervised chewing and pulling the chew when it gets small is the standard advice.
Interactions and who should be careful: Aggressive chewers and dogs that gulp rather than gnaw are the ones that get into trouble.
