Industrial refining of starch or plant sap.
Why it's in the product
Sweetness, browning, and softness. In semi-moist treats sugar also binds water so the piece stays chewy.
Safety and toxicity
Not acutely toxic. The concern is chronic: pets have no dietary requirement for added sugar, and it contributes calories toward obesity, which is the single most common nutritional problem in US pets.
Interactions and who should be careful
Directly relevant for diabetic pets. Also worth noting that xylitol, a different sweetener, is genuinely lethal to dogs. Corn syrup and cane sugar are not xylitol, but always check treat labels for it.
